To me, the suites are the extraction of the genius that is Bach.
Even those who don't listen to classical music can appreciate them--not only because the Prelude is heard often throughout popular culture--but because it's so beautifuly melodic. It's so rich, even though there is no surface harmony I think the human ear almost gathers harmony from the peice's architecture.
Bach is one of DaVinci's perpetual motion machines realized, no more apparent then in the suites.
